Yesterday, many gathered to celebrate the life of Martha White Farris '42 in Floydada, Texas. Throughout her lifetime, Martha was a steadfast supporter of her alma mater: she served as Honorary Chair in the university?s Challenge Beyond 2000 capital and endowment campaign, and she made generous gifts for many building projects on the campus. In 2006, UMHB conferred upon her its highest honor, the Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree, in recognition of her exemplary service to her church, her community, and her alma mater. In 2011, the university?s newest residence hall was named Farris Hall, to recognize Martha?s generous support of the university throughout her lifetime. When the new Student Union is completed this fall, it will include a practice hall named Farris Band Hall, in recognition of her most recent gift of support. Pictured below is UMHB's 2012-2013 One Voice with Mrs. Farris in her home last fall.

Did you know: Easter Pageant began in 1940. MHB's president, Dr. Gordon Singleton, looked out his office window one day toward Luther Hall's ruins, and decided that they would be a perfect background for the play. He discussed the idea with the school's drama teacher, and gave her $25 to cover the production's costs. The first pageant was at 5:30 p.m. on Easter Sunday. With a cast of about 50 students, the play was witnessed by only a handful of spectators. In 1941, the audience grew to 700. In 2013, around 7,000 people visited UMHB's campus to watch the Easter Pageant. The pageant from 1944 is pictured below.
